WHERE TO DIVE: BVI
The BVI huddle to form a sheltered paradise of secluded coves, calm shores and crystal-
clear water, which in turn provide outstanding underwater visibility, healthy coral and a wide
variety of diving sites. The Out Islands and cays south of Tortola hold the most sites, where
divers will immerse to coral gardens and stunning arches, caverns and other geological form-
ations. There are lots of shipwrecks to explore, too, thanks to the BVI's historic role as a
pirate hideaway and trading route pit stop.
For marine life, it is common to see rays and dolphins. Between February and April
humpback whales swim to the BVI to breed, and you're likely to hear them, if not see them
steaming through the water.
Most dive sites lie within 30 minutes of dive-operator bases.
Conservation is a big deal here, and there are lots of permanent mooring buoys.
