ing. The one exception is a 9pm ferry between Red Hook, St Thomas and Road Town, Tor-
tola that operates Thursday through Sunday.
» For routes between Road Town and Virgin Gorda, or between Road Town and Charlotte
Amalie - ie routes that multiple ferry companies ply - it can be a good idea to just buy a
one-way ticket so you're not stuck waiting for a particular company upon return.
» All ferries listed here are for foot-passengers only. The sole car-ferry service operates
between Red Hook, St Thomas and Cruz Bay, St John, though most car-rental companies
do not allow their vehicles to travel between islands. See Click here for details.
» Despite the convoluted-looking schedule, the ferry service is easy to navigate. The free
tourist magazines publish full schedules each month. Good online sources to check are
the BVI Welcome Guide ( www.bviwelcome.com ) and VI Now ( www.vinow.com ) . Or
simply call the companies to get the most current times.
» We've included additional ferry information in the Getting There & Around sections
throughout this topic.
» If you want to do it yourself, ie operate your own boat, the major islands have marinas
where you can charter sailing yachts or powerboats, either bareboat or with a crew. See the
Chartering a Boat chapter ( Click here ) for more.
