In-Depth Information
Maps
» Many businesses offer free, fold-out road maps of the various islands and their main
towns, which should suffice for driving trips.
» In the USVI, the widely available free tourist magazines St Thomas/St John This Week
and St Croix This Week also have maps inside.
» In the BVI, free road maps are available at the airport and ferry terminals.
Money
» The US and British Virgin Islands both use the US dollar.
» All prices quoted in this topic are in US dollars ($), unless stated otherwise.
» See Click here for exchange rates and costs.
ATMs
You'll find FirstBank, Scotiabank, First Caribbean and Banco Popular in the main towns,
with ATMs hooked into worldwide networks (Plus, Cirrus, Exchange etc).
Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and the Out Islands do not have ATMs, so you'll need to cash
up beforehand.
Cash
Though carrying cash is more risky, it's still a good idea to travel with some for the con-
venience. It's useful for tipping and to pay for taxis. In some cases, cash is necessary to pay
for lodgings; inquire in advance to avoid surprises.
Credit Cards
Major credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in the Virgin Islands;
American Express is less common, especially in the BVI. Without having a piece of plastic
you'll find it hard or impossible to rent a car or book a room over the phone. Note that some
credit card companies charge a 'transaction fee' (around 3% of whatever you purchased);
check with your provider to avoid any unexpected costs.
For lost or stolen cards, these numbers operate 24 hours:
