In-Depth Information
While English is the islands' official language, you'll hear unique phrases such as 'limin' (pronounced '
lime -in'; means 'relaxing') and 'wind at your back, mon' (a parting comment that means 'I hope you have
an easy day').
The BVI held elections in 2007, when Ralph T O'Neal took the helm as premier. He's
a member of the VI Party, which is more inward focused and promises to help the 'little
man.' Its main competition is the National Democratic Party, which looks toward outside
interests and development. The next election will be in fall 2011. It is expected to be tight,
as the VI Party has to address contentious issues about its handling of water and sewage
contracts.
