Norman Island
It's all about buried treasure on Norman Island ( www.normanisland.com ) . Or so they
say. The hype surrounding the BVI's largest uninhabited landmass is almost too much to
bear.
Some chroniclers say Norman Island is the prototype for Robert Louis Stevenson's
Treasure Island , and Stevenson based it on accounts his seafaring uncle told him while in
the region.
Documented history does indeed show a rich past on Norman. After the crew of the
Spanish galleon Nuestra SeƱora de Guadalupe mutinied in 1750, they buried several chests
of silver coins on the island. Locals from Tortola dug it up. But did they find it all?
Another story centers on the French pirate Normand, who left Anegada and settled here
(giving the island his name) with booty he'd ransacked from various ships. Rivals killed
Normand, but never found the loot. And so rumors of silver and gold persist.
You'll feel the pirate spirit all over the island. It lingers at the Caves off Treasure Point,
where Mr Fleming and the fictional Long John Silver allegedly hid their cache. These days
