In-Depth Information
Biras Creek Resort HOTEL $$$
( 284-494-3555, 877-883-0756; www.biras.com ; r from $675; ) A neighbor
to Bitter End on the eastern shore of North Sound, Biras Creek is an exclusive oasis for up
to 70 guests. The 140-acre property fills a narrow isthmus between North Sound and the
open Atlantic. The rooms are individual cottages, the best of which front the Atlantic so
you hear the roar of the waves as a nighttime lullaby. They're well appointed, though not
outrageously luxurious, as you might expect at this price. Each guest gets his or her own
mountain bike, and there are excellent trails among the sea grape tree forest for cycling and
hiking. Horseback riding is another option. Meal plans are available at the resort's chic res-
taurant for an additional fee. Wi-fi is available in the public areas only. Biras' owners are
developing the land at Oil Nut Bay for villas, so expect more company around this part of
North Sound in the years to come.
Eating
Fat Virgin's Café CAFE $$
( 284-495-7052; www.fatvirgin.com ; mains $10-20; lunch & dinner; ) This
cafe is the budget diner's delight of North Sound. Travelers must come to the little bistro
(and little boutique) that rises from the Biras Creek Resort's dock by boat, located on the
west side of the property. The roti stuffed with curried chicken rocks the palate, or you can
opt for a good ol' hot dog, burger or BLT sandwich to go with the sensibly priced beer.
Ask about the daily West Indian specials (Mondays are devoted to rotis) and Friday night
Chinese specials.
Clubhouse Steak & Seafood Grille STEAK, SEAFOOD $$$
( 284-494-2745; brunch/dinner buffet $30/45; breakfast, lunch & dinner) Of
Bitter End Yacht Club's three restaurants overlooking North Sound, the Clubhouse rules
the roost. There is an a la carte menu here, but most people order the buffet. It's monument-
al in both variety and substance, with roasted meats, grilled fish and shellfish leading the
way. The Sunday brunch is popular. Make reservations early, as the Clubhouse is a favorite
of the boating crowd. If you don't have your own vessel, catch the free Bitter End Ferry
that departs Gun Creek hourly on the half hour.
