The US islands provide distinctive opportunities to dip a paddle. St Thomas has a man-
grove preserve where you can glide through to a coral rubble beach. You can also steer to
nearby Hassel Island, where old fort ruins and a fishy reef for snorkeling loom. On St Croix
you can paddle Salt River Bay. This is the historic site where Columbus landed in 1493, but
even more impressive come nighttime is the bioluminescent water. The algae spark like un-
derwater fireflies when the moon is new.
