JR O'Neal Botanic Gardens GARDEN
(cnr Botanic Rd & Main St; admission $3; 8am-4pm) The Botanic Gardens are a
four-acre national park and a pleasant refuge from Road Town's traffic, noise and heat.
Benches are set amid indigenous and exotic tropical plants and there is also an orchid
house, lily pond, small rainforest and cactus grove. The herb garden is rife with traditional
bush medicine plants. It's about two blocks north of the town's main roundabout.
Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum MUSEUM
(Station Rd; 9am-3pm Mon-Fri) There are no bells and whistles here, but if you're
keen to take your time and read about the area's history, this museum in an old sugar mill
is a worthy stop. A group of friendly volunteers runs it, and they'll be happy to talk you
through the intriguing displays. You'll learn how the McClevery slaves built the dwelling
in 1780, and how molasses, sugar and rum were produced until the 1940s. Later, the gov-
ernment had a cotton gin onsite. Other rooms hold a hodgepodge of exhibits on local ship-
wrecks, fauna and flora (don't forget to check out the sugarcane growing by the front door).
Yet another room serves as a gallery showcasing local artists' works.
Reach it by taking Waterfront Dr past the roundabout for 0.25 miles, to where Waterfront
intersects with Station Ave. Head up Station and you'll see the museum a short distance up
the road.
Government House MUSEUM
(Main St; admission $3; 9am-3pm Mon-Fri, to 1pm Sat) Standing at the extreme
south end of Main St like one of those imperial symbols you may have seen in Penang
and Rangoon, this whitewashed manor is a classic example of British colonial architecture.
