Activities
Bird-watching
The West End Salt Pond at Sandy Point on the southwest tip of the island is a good spot for
seabirds like egrets and brown pelicans. (You can also see these birds in abundance around
Great Pond off the Southside Rd.) You may also see several species of grebes and herons.
The rainforest trails along Scenic Rd lead you into the territory of parakeets, canaries and
hawks like the 'killy killy' sparrow hawk. Hummingbirds and bananaquits are common
around the flowering ruins of many of the island's old estates, including the St George Vil-
lage Botanical Garden.
Horseback Riding
Paul & Jill's Equestrian Stables ( 340-772-2880, 340-332-0417;
www.paulandjills.com ; Rte 63; 1½hr tours $90) offers trail rides that lead through hid-
den plantation ruins and the rainforest to hilltop vistas. Cash or traveler's checks only. The
stables are located 1½ miles north of Frederiksted on Rte 63.
Hiking
Hiking to Hams Bluff on the island's tip-top northwest corner unfurls views of sea-poun-
ded cliffs. Visiting with a guide is a good idea; Click here for some recommendations.

regular intervals during the year, where you get to go inside homes not normally open to
