Beaches
Beaches are listed in the order you'll encounter them when driving east from Christiansted.
Buccaneer Beach ACTIVITIES BEACH
A crescent beach sheltered from the trade winds and popular with tourists, Buccaneer
Beach is in front of the Buccaneer hotel, about 2 miles east of Christiansted off the East
End Rd. If you are not a guest of the hotel, you must pay $4 to enter at the hotel gatehouse.
You can take advantage of the changing facilities and beach restaurant, but the beach chairs
and towels are reserved for hotel guests.
Shoys Beach SNORKELING BEACH
This long crescent of sand just east of Buccaneer Beach is just as protected as the hotel
beach but less touristy, and it's free. Lots of upscale Cruzans come here on weekends. Head
off the point at the west end of the beach for good snorkeling. To get to Shoys, go to the
gatehouse at the Buccaneer, but instead of following the road into the hotel, take the road
that veers off to the right; check in with the guard to the gated community and follow the
road to the beach. There are no facilities here.
Chenay Bay ACTIVITIES BEACH
This beach lies a mile east of Shoys. The Chenay Bay Beach Resort is here with its bar-res-
taurant and water-sports concession renting out kayaks. Swimming at Chenay Bay is pro-
tected, and the water is shallow, which makes the area popular with families and children.
There's good snorkeling if you stay to the right and follow the cove around the point.
Reef Beach ACTIVITIES BEACH
Travelers will find Reef Beach at Tague (sometimes called Teague) Bay in front of Dug-
gan's Reef restaurant, about 7 miles east of Christiansted on Rte 82. The water is a little
rough, as the trade winds sometimes blow onto the beach. A lot of the sunbathers here
are snowbirds and short-time guests staying in the condo developments in the surrounding
area. For strong swimmers, there is good snorkeling on the offshore reef. The spot is also a
favorite for windsurfing.
