car mixes local fruits like mango, soursop and carambola (aka starfruit) with organic blue
agave nectar to make its healthful treats. The tiny takeaway shop also offers cookies and
sweets (gummi worms, lollipops etc) made with agave nectar. All the spoons and cups are
biodegradable. Jaccar is a bit tricky to find; it's tucked into the strip of shops in the Arawak
Building, across the road from the post office in Gallows Bay, about a half-mile east of
downtown.
Drinking
The best way to find out what's up is to check the entertainment section of St Croix This
Week ( www.stcroixthisweek.com ) and the daily St Croix Avis . A healthy collection of
gin mills lines the boardwalk along Kings Wharf; there is always live music on at one or
the other of them throughout the week.
Fort Christian Brew Pub MICROBREWERY
( 340-713-9820; www.fortchristianbrewpub.com ;boardwalkatKing'sAlleyHotel;
mains$17-23; lunch&dinner) Right on the boardwalk overlooking yachts bobbing in
the sea, this open-air pub is primo for sampling VI Brewing Company's small-batch suds.
Try the flagship Blackbeard Ale or Foxy's Lager (the brewmaster here doubles as the suds-
maker at Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke). Happy hour between 4pm and 7pm attracts young con-
tinentals working on the island and rafts of travelers drawn to the waterfront. The scene
can be a good spot to gain some local knowledge or get invited to a party. The New Or-
leans-style menu features jambalaya and spicy shrimp étouffée (a tomato-based stew), but
we advise sticking to the beer and breeze.
Comanche Mill Yacht-less Club BAR
( 340-773-0210; www.comanchemillyacht-lessclub.com ; boardwalk at Comanche
Walk) Set around an old windmill at the water's edge, the Yacht-less Club is hard to miss.
