Danish West Indies Emancipation Day FIREWORKS

plenty of fireworks over Christiansted's harbor.

geants, parades and calypso competitions, putting a West Indies spin on the holiday season.
Getting There & Around
AIR
Henry E Rohlsen Airport (STX; www.viport.com ) is on St Croix's southwest side and
handles flights from the US, many connecting via San Juan, Puerto Rico or St Thomas.

Between St Thomas and St Croix, Seaborne Airlines ( www.seaborneairlines.com ) flies
cool floatplanes from wharves at Christiansted and Charlotte Amalie. The cost is around
$80 each way.
BOAT
VI Seatrans ( 340-776-5494; www.goviseatrans.com ) operates a passenger ferry
between Christiansted and Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas (one way $50, 90 minutes). It sails
twice on Friday and Saturday, and once on Sunday and Monday. Departures are from Gal-
lows Bay, about a 0.75-mile walk east of downtown Christiansted. Look for humpback
whales during winter crossings.
The cruise ship dock is in Frederiksted on the island's west end.
BUS
Vitran ( 340-778-0898; fare $1) buses travel along Centerline Rd between Christi-
ansted and Frederiksted. The schedule is erratic; buses depart roughly every hour or two.
