One of St Croix's most striking reminders of its colonial sugarcane history, Whim Plant-
ation (

) rises out of the landscape a few miles from Frederiksted. Tour the atmo-
spheric grounds to see windmills and steam engines used for grinding cane. Buildings such
as the cookhouse (where they serve traditional snacks), bathhouse, watch house, caretaker's
cottage and slave quarters also speckle the area. Some are restored to their vintage state; oth-
ers function as exhibition spaces. The great house hosts intimate, candlelit classical music
concerts.
