Morgan's Mango CARIBBEAN $$
( 340-693-8141; www.morgansmango.com ; Mongoose Junction; mains $15-28;
dinner) Take in a view of the harbor while dining on imaginative Caribbean recipes for
dishes such as Haitian voodoo snapper or Cuban citrus chicken. The owners often bring in
live acoustic acts (usually on Tuesday and Friday), making Morgan's a good choice for a
fun or romantic night out.
Uncle Joe's BBQ BARBECUE $$
( 340-693-8806; mains $10-14; lunch & dinner) Locals and visitors go wild, tear-
ing into the barbecue chicken, ribs and corn on the cob at this open-air restaurant across
from the post office. The chef grills the meats outside, perfuming the entire harbor-front
with their tangy goodness. Cash only.
La Tapa MEDITERRANEAN $$$
( 340-693-7755; www.latapastjohn.com ; small plates $11-18, mains $35-41; din-
ner) Next door to Woody's and across the street from FirstBank, La Tapa has the look and
smell of a sangria well you may have visited in Ibiza or Mallorca. The menu and wine list
change daily, but expect some sort of paella and maybe grilled langostinos with chipotle-
lime aioli and organic greens grown on the island. Reservations are essential.
Fish Trap SEAFOOD $$
( 340-693-9994; www.thefishtrap.com ; Raintree Court; mains $15-32; dinner
Tue-Sun) The Fish Trap has been a popular travelers' stop for years for its fish, shellfish
and pastas. The restaurant stands on a sheltered deck. Consider the fish chowder or the ve-
getarian primavera pasta with a garlic Parmesan sauce over fettuccine. Lighter appetites
can opt for the fish-and-chips basket.
Asolare ASIAN FUSION $$$
( 340-779-4747; Estate Lindholm; mains $30-45; dinner) Perched on a hill over-
looking Cruz Bay, Asolare offers the most exotic view and cuisine on St John - it's the
place people go for a romantic splurge. The chef constantly rotates menu items, frequently
drawn from the Pacific Rim, such as Kampuchea shrimp ravioli and Indochine bouil-
labaisse. It's a short drive north of town; take North Shore Rd and look for Asolare's sign
pointing left. You'll need reservations.
