In-Depth Information
Car
St John has a handful of rental agencies. Most provide Jeeps and SUVs to handle the steep,
rugged, twisted roads. Costs hover near $80 per day. The following agencies have outlets in
Cruz Bay near the ferry terminals. Whatever agency you use, be sure to ask if you can park
in their lot when in Cruz Bay, since parking is notoriously difficult in town. Remember to
drive on the left and fill up in Cruz Bay, where the only gas station is.

Hitchhiking
Although Lonely Planet does not recommend hitchhiking, quite a few people use this meth-
od for traveling around St John. If you hitchhike, don't travel alone and always exercise
caution.
Taxi
Some taxis are passenger vans that carry eight to 10 passengers. Many are open-air safaris
like the ones on St Thomas. Territorial law sets the island's rates for all taxis. They're
listed in St Thomas/St John This Week magazine. Call the St John Taxi Commission (
340-774-3130) for pick-ups.
The following table shows current per-person rates for popular destinations from Cruz
Bay. The price drops a few dollars when more than one passenger goes to the destination.
There's also an additional $2-per-bag luggage fee.
