In-Depth Information
of these metals are known to cause fibrosis or cancer in humans. Therefore, mul-
tiple physical and chemical characteristics should be taken into consideration during
the manufacturing process to ensure the safe design of products that contain CNTs.
Human disease as a result of CNT exposure has not yet been documented and this
is likely due to the infancy of the nanotechnology field and the lack of exposure or
epidemiologic data. The evidence from studies with rodents indicates that there is
the potential for CNTs to cause lung disease in humans and this possibility should be
considered when weighing societal benefits of CNTs.
