GLOSSARY
Ex situ
Analysis of nanomaterials after prior re-isolation of the nanomaterial out of a test matrix
(i.e., after incubation with biomolecules, the nanomaterials are isolated to separate
from non-bound materials to perform the analysis of adsorbed nanomaterials).
Ex vivo
Experiments performed with whole isolated organs.
In situ
Analysis of nanomaterials inside a test matrix (e.g., inside cells, tissues, or in
biologically relevant test fluids) without any processing or re-isolation of the
nanomaterial before analysis.
In vitro
Experiments performed under simplified conditions using isolated components of the
organism (cell lines or primary cells in single culture or co-culture).
In vivo
Experiments performed using whole organisms (i.e., with maximal biological
complexity).
