In-Depth Information
announcements have been issued to deal with short-term coups, bomb threats to
airlines, violence by terrorists and anniversary dates of specific terrorist events.
Travel warnings are issued when the State Department decides, based on all
relevant information, to recommend that Americans avoid travel to a certain
country.
Traditional warden systems rely upon the efforts of dedicated volunteers to
spread the word among Americans living in the area. The newly created e-mail
service provides an efficient way for the Department of State to quickly contact
Americans in Germany.
This service will be used for official purposes only. Most messages broadcast
will directly relate to your safety or security. Recent public announcements con-
cerning the possibility of terrorist threats targeted against Americans are an exam-
ple of the new service's usefulness. We may also, upon occasion, use the service
to transmit information of general interest to Americans in Germany, including
announcements concerning taxes and voter registration.
We urge you to sign up for this valuable service as soon as possible. To sub-
scribe to the new service, simply go to our sign-up page, or send an e-mail to
GermanyACS@State.gov and put the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line.
Check with your local embassy and find out if it offers a similar serv-
ice. If it does or if one is being contemplated, make sure you subscribe to
the service. In addition to security updates, these sites also provide addi-
tional service-related information to American citizens. Do not fail to sub-
scribe to whatever informational services the local embassy or consulate
may provide. Often this will be the fastest way to receive updates about
the local security situation.
Exhibit 6.2 is a sample checklist that will help you address each of the
points we have discussed.
