Hotel Safety
and Security
THUS FAR, THIS TOPIC HAS DISCUSSED how to maximize security
in areas over which you have daily control. We have discussed how
to secure your residence, your vehicle, and your place of employment. How-
ever, often you will be traveling either on business or for pleasure. Trav-
eling presents a variety of additional security concerns. The next several
chapters provide you with the necessary information to maximize your
personal security while en route to your intended destination and while
staying in local hotels.
Making security enhancements at your home or workplace is easy
because you have both control over the location and the time to make the
necessary improvements. Obviously, as a guest at a hotel you have neither
of these advantages. Therefore, the best thing you can do to enhance your
physical security while traveling is to select a hotel that meets your secu-
rity needs. The single best way to find a good and secure place to stay is
to contact the embassy or consulate. Ask where diplomats and other gov-
ernment officials stay when they are in country. The regional security offi-
cer (RSO) is a good source for information. You can be sure that the RSO
has a list of several thoroughly vetted hotels that are used to house VIPs
when they come to the officer's area of responsibility. Another easy sug-
gestion to follow is simply to stay at the better hotels belonging to a rep-
utable chain. Major hotel chains generally are managed by Americans or
Europeans and have security standards that are comparable to the security
