abreast of the developing situation. A formal report process to facilitate
this transfer of information back home should be established in much the
same way as the various governmental agencies are required to notify their
headquarters' command center of details about an emergency or devel-
oping crisis. Local federal law enforcement offices are required, for exam-
ple, to notify the command center in Washington, D.C., about shooting
incidents involving their agents. Typically, most agencies are required to
make a phone-in notification to the watch commander and provide the
who, what, where, when, why, and how of the situation. This information
is then logged in the command center duty log. Within 24 hours, a formal
teletype must be sent that provides greater details about the incident as
well as an account of all actions taken to that point. A similar protocol
should be established for your company as well.
