any way. An alert will be generated if anyone attempts to cut the fence,
climb over it, or dig under it. Vibration sensors will even pick up the pres-
ence of individuals approaching the barrier on foot. Infrared technology
and video monitors can instantly track in on the intruders and precisely
pinpoint the area that is being scouted. Fences of this type are state of the
art. They are also very expensive and require the client to dedicate trained
personnel to maintain the system. Smart fences provide the most effective
outer security perimeter for your sites short of an operational minefield.
Magal is perhaps the premier manufacturer of this type of technology. The
company designs, builds, and installs fences that can detect any type of
intrusion, including attempts to approach, cut through, climb over, and
even tunnel under the barrier. The Magal Security Systems' DTR-2000
Taut Wire Intrusion Detection System (TWIDS) (see Exhibit 13.1) has a
long and proven history of reliability under some of the most challenging
of circumstances. The design uses an electro-mechanical sensor that, when
activated, sends a signal to a computerized control center, which then
analyzes the signal and alerts the facility to the type and location of the
attempted breach. The system is designed to virtually eliminate false alarms
due to the fact that a force of less than about 15 kilograms (33 pounds)
