In-Depth Information
Contents Difficult to Remove
Once you open the package, you may feel some pressure as you are remov-
ing the contents. This might be indicative of the triggering device press-
ing against the inside of the container. Once the contents are removed,
the pressure holding the trigger down is released and detonation occurs.
DOS AND DON'TS
What do you do if you receive a package or letter that you suspect may
contain a bomb or hazardous substance? The first thing to do is remain
calm to allow yourself to think clearly. In case it is not obvious, DO NOT
OPEN THE ITEM. Similarly, do not attempt to open a portion of the
package and try to observe the contents. If it is a bomb or biological
weapon, any tampering may cause it to detonate or release the toxic sub-
stance. Put the package or letter down in an open area. Do not place it in
a drawer, cabinet, or other confined space. By confining the object, you
can actually enhance the explosive force. Also, if flammable or explosive
gases are leaking from the object, you need to allow for as much ventila-
tion as possible. If the package is put into a small space, the concentra-
tion of the gases may quickly reach what is termed an “explosive
atmosphere.” Isolate the item and open the windows. This will allow the
dangerous gases to vent and lessen the chance of explosion.
Do not submerge the object in water. Many chemicals explode on con-
tact with water. In any event, water will probably not disable the device
anyway. Water may short out electronic detonators with unfortunate
results. Leave the package unmolested and evacuate the area. If you are
in a country with an efficient and trustworthy police force, contact them.
Otherwise, contact the embassy or consulate and ask for instructions.
DELIVERIES AT HOME
The issue of package delivery presents other issues to deal with as well.
Apart from the potential for danger in a delivered package, there is also
the possibility of being assaulted by the delivery person. By the way, this
is true for anyone unknown that you open your door for: repairmen,
inspectors, or installers of any kind. Ordinary criminals pose as individuals
