In-Depth Information
Armor-piercing ammunition is likely. Or they will use the American-made
M-16 rifle firing 5.56 mm rounds. Again, light armor-piercing ammuni-
tion is commonly available. Vehicles should be capable of stopping such
ammunition as an absolute minimum in protection.
O'Gara & Hess also builds vehicles that provide protection against an
armor-piercing projectile from a military assault rifle. The added level of
protection requires the use of a substantially greater amount of armor and
ballistic glass. Not every vehicle can accommodate this added weight. The
company has several decades of experience in engineering rifle-protected
vehicles that not only provide substantial levels of protection but are also
able to be driven with a high level of performance and handling.
Specialty threats also must be considered. Have the local terror cells
ever used a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) during an attack? How about
mines or explosives? Vehicles can be armored against those threats as well.
The downside is heavier weight and greater cost. Remember, any armor
can be defeated. Shoulder-fired missiles and enough explosives can stop
a tank. They can certainly stop an armored car. Currently, O'Gara & Hess
offers an explosive-resistant vehicle that provides protection against TNT,
pipe bombs, grenade attack, and land mines. We suggest that anyone in
need of such a vehicle contact the company or a professional security-
consulting firm with expertise in this area. O'Gara & Hess, as well as our
own company, have expert staff who can analyze the anticipated threat
and recommend the correct level of armor protection. These companies
can armor virtually any vehicle that may be appropriate to the specific
needs of the client. Exhibit 9.9 presents a chart detailing the various levels
of protection offered by O'Gara & Hess.
GAS MASKS AND ESCAPE HOODS
Several additional products critical for surviving certain types of attacks
are not related to armored products. Gas masks and escape hoods are
indispensable kinds of protective equipment that are the only means of
countering an attack using gas or biological weapons. The appropriate
mask or hood also allows wearers to survive in an atmosphere rendered
toxic during a fire. We briefly discuss the products available to the civil-
ian market to prepare you to meet either danger.
Law enforcement SWAT teams have long used gas masks during tactical
operations where CS (o-chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile) gas was deployed.
