Body ovate, compressed; dorsal spines slen-
der; anal spines short; caudal fi n rounded; scales
ctenoid; lateral line interrupted, sometimes
absent. Body reddish brown with a series of alter-
nate obliquely vertical black and greenish or dirty
red bands and blackish spots, opercles also with
such spots; a conspicuous bluish-black spot (cov-
ering superfi cial part of cleithrum above the pec-
toral fi n base) behind the gill opening; fi ns
yellowish green or bluish, dorsal base and fi n
with a series of prominent dark spots/blotches,
caudal peduncle without a dark blotch, body with
indistinct bars on sides.

ages; Shimla), Jammu and Kashmir (Poonch
Valley), Nagaland (Naga hills) and West Bengal
(Adma and Jayanti rivers).

Habitat and Ecology
Inhabits shallow-water riffl es, spring pools and
small hill streams with pebbly bottom.
Conservation Status
IUCN Red List, least concern.
Maximum Size
8.9 cm (Day, 1875 ), commonly much less.
Remarks
Of no fi shery interest. Record of this species
from the main Asan River (Uniyal 2010 ; Uniyal
and Kumar, 2006 ; Uniyal and Mehta 2007 ) is
doubtful as being a fi sh of torrents.
