Remarks
Of no fi shery interest; kept in aquaria. It has been
found to be of great utility for larvicidal
purpose.

India
Confi ned to hilly areas of the northern provinces,
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Haryana,
Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh
and West Bengal. Found in Kosi, Bagmati,
Gandak drainages in Bihar and headwaters of
Ganga river (in Uttarakhand). Introduced in
Maharashtra (in Lonavla lakes, Pune district).

Habitat and Ecology
Found in rivers in clear streams with rocky beds
in submontane areas. It breeds during early mon-
soon season (June) in heavily inundated areas. It
breeds approximately after attaining three years
of age. Its wide mouth and streamlined body are
well suited for a predaceous life.
Diagnostic Characters

Body compressed; cleft of mouth deep, bar-
bels absent (rudimentary maxillary pair in juve-
niles); dorsal fi n origin ahead to that of anal fi n
and nearer to the caudal base than to snout tip;
scales small, lateral line complete. Body silvery
with 15-17 dark spots of varying size and shapes;
fi ns yellowish orange.
Sexual Dimorphism: In male, snout, subor-
bital bones and lower jaw densely covered with
tubercles, few tubercles on opercular region and
skin tip of lower jaw; scales on the body with
tubercles; outer few rays of pelvic fi n slightly
shorter; upper surface of outer few rays of dorsal
with fi ne tubercles. In female, head and body
smooth; outer rays of pelvic fi n slightly longer
than inner rays.

The population of this species seems to be
affected by destructive fi shing methods.
