of opercle; lateral line absent, rudimentary or
incomplete, extending beyond the pectoral fi n or
up to the base of the pelvic fi ns. Body sides blue,
traversed with fi ve uniformly, pigmented,
horizontal golden stripes, extending to the end of
caudal fi n rays; anal fi n also distinctively striped.
Sexual Dimorphism: In male, body slim, cau-
dal fi n typically homocercal and blunt and lighter
in colour, while in female, body with bulging
sides and deeper colouration.
Threats
Being a popular aquarium fi sh, it might suffer
from overexploitation resulting in fl uctuation of
individuals.
Remarks
Of no fi shery interest; kept in aquaria.

aquaria fi sh rearing facility).
Habitat and Ecology
Inhabits streams, canals, ditches, ponds and
lakes. Also occurs in slow-moving to stagnant-
standing water bodies, particularly ricefi elds,
lower reaches of streams, rivulets at foothills.
Feeds on worms and small crustaceans and also
on insect larvae. Breeds all year round. Spawning
is induced by temperature and commences at the
onset of the monsoon season. Food availability
also acts as cue for breeding.
Diagnostic Characters

Body rhomboidal; barbels absent; lateral line
complete. Body greenish above, silvery on sides;
three blue narrow bands divided by yellow bands
extending backwards to the caudal fi n with a pair
of blue marks at its base.
