Habitat and Ecology
Inhabits clear water hill streams and large rivers
with gravelly substratum. It is a benthopelagic
bottom feeder.

Snout and lower jaw with tubercles; barbels
two short pairs, rostral pair often absent; dorsal fi n
inserted entirely in advance of anal fi n. Body sil-
very with 8-12 vertical bands; scales with many
radii, lateral line complete with double black spot.
Sexual Dimorphism: Male large and robust with
paired fi ns enlarged and fan-like, outer few rays of
pectorals strongly thickened and ossifi ed, dorsal
and anal fi ns well expanded; snout, lower jaw and
outer branchiostegal rays covered by thorny tuber-
cles, body roughened due to presence of tubercles,
bands faded and dorsal fi n margin grey-edged.
Female normal without above modifi cations.
Conservation Status
IUCN Red List, least concern.
Threats
It is locally threatened by destructive fi shing
techniques such as dynamite fi shing, overexploi-
tation, loss of habitat and siltation.
Remarks
Of no fi shery interest.

and certain human activities.
