withstand the journey home (they keep for six months, even outside the fridge).
Purists will love the plain blocks but those after something different can try the
vanilla-flavoured variety, or those with peppercorns or raisins. Thanks to French
influences, it is as good as the genuine article in France, but at much sweeter
prices.
GETTING THERE & AWAY
All taxis heading south towards Antsirabe pass through Ambatolampy (one hour,
Ar10,000).
Lac Itasy & Around
Lac Itasy (45 sq km) was formed when the valley surrounding it was blocked by lava flow
about 8000 years ago. Although the area has been completely deforested and none of the
originalvegetationremains,thevolcanicdomesthatriseabovethelandscapehaveacertain
beauty of their own. The pretty town of
Ampefy
is now a firm weekend favourite amongst
Tana residents.
There are good possibilities for hiking around the lakeshore: a new 17km trail has been
created that takes in 13 small villages and panoramic views of the lake. The trail starts near
Hôtel Kavitaha. Follow the red markings.
About 5km west of Ampefy, in the village of
Antafofo
, the Liliha River plunges more
than 20m. In French, the falls are known as the
Chutes de la Lily
(admission Ar2000).

On a lovely spot by the lakeside, the Kavitaha is a bargain: rooms are bright and clean,
the garden is gorgeous and the pool fantastic. The restaurant serves good meals (mains
Ar10,000) and has splendid lake views.

tation for his excellent food, and Tana residents come here in droves at the weekend. The
restaurant is a big thatched pavilion, full of bric-a-brac and with lovely views of the coun-
tryside. Small, thatched bungalows are available. It is very quiet on weekdays.
