and coal powder. The workers are incredibly dexterous and fast: one team of two can pro-

Station Forestière de Manjakatompo HIKING
(admission Ar5000) This forest reserve was badly burnt in 2011, but it is still a good area
for walking. Make sure you get a guide to explore the area: they will generally be available
at the forestry station gates. Or organise one via local hotels. Access is via a secondary road
towards Ankaniheny.

La Pineta GUESTHOUSE €€
( 43 493 02, 033 28 176 86; http://madagascar-alapineta.com ; Route d'Antsirabe; r
Ar40,000, without bathroom Ar26,000) With its vaguely Mexican-sounding name and
vaguely Swiss-chalet feel, La Pineta is an unusual but tip-top option in Ambatolampy. The
five pretty rooms have lovely wooden floors and bright colours. Meals are served either in
the dining room or under the gazebo in the garden, and the friendly owners are an excellent
source of information on treks and excursions in the area.
Le Rendez-Vous des Pêcheurs PENSION €€
( 43 492 04; www.madagascar-parleshauts.com ; r Ar40,000) Going strong since 1951,
the Rendez-Vous is a local institution. Every tour travelling between Tana and Antsirabe
or enjoying a day trip in the highlands seems to stop here for lunch (mains Ar9000 to
Ar12,000). The dining room has the feel of an old-fashioned canteen and the food is hearty
and great value. There are spacious rooms on the first floor; just like the dining room, the
furniture hasn't changed since the 1950s, but it's immaculate and the manager is a mine
of information on the area. He can also organise tours between here, Antsirabe and Am-
bositra.
MADAGASCAR'S HOME OF FOIE GRAS
The little village of Behenjy , about 40km south of Antananarivo on the RN7, is
famous for its duck and its foie gras. In fact, much of the duck and foie gras
you'll enjoy in Tana's restaurants come from around here. At the Coin du Foie
Gras ( 033 11 033 26; aniriaandrianaivo@yahoo.fr; mains Ar5000-12,000),
right at the heart of the village, you can stop for a gourmet lunch of foie gras or
