AROUND ANTANANARIVO
The highlands around Antananarivo are often ignored by travellers pushing on to other re-
gions, but the whole area is perfect day-trip country. Keen cyclists will have a ball in the
12 sacred hills surrounding the city, and even a brief excursion offers plenty of spectacular
views and an insight into the history and culture of the Merina people.
If you don't have your own transport, the best way to see the sites around Tana is to
charter a taxi for the day; a lovely day trip would be to combine Ilafy, Ambohimanga and
Ivato (expect to pay Ar100,000).

About 13km from Antananarivo is the village-suburb of Ivato, where the international air-
port is located.
