You will find plenty of arts, crafts, T-shirts, coffee and spices in the souvenir shops of cent-
ral Tana.
Marché Artisanal de La Digue
HANDICRAFTS
(La Digue; 9am-5.30pm) The most popular place to pick up souvenirs is this market
locatedabout12kmoutoftownonabendintheIvatoairportroad.Artisansandmiddlemen
from all over the country sell their products here; popular souvenirs include embroidered
tablecloths, brightly coloured raffia baskets, woodcarvings, spices, vanilla, gemstones, re-
cycled paper products and T-shirts. Bargaining is essential - halve the price you're quoted
and work from there. A taxi (around Ar20,000 return) is the easiest way to get here and
back with your purchases. Otherwise, if you're going to the airport with a taxi, leave an
hour early and stop on your way there. Cash only.

This is the Tana shop of the wonderful organic Ferme de Morarano in Ambatolampy where
you'll be able to buy everything from essential oils, to artisan jams, chutneys and spices.
There are also natural lotions and potions (moisturiser, shampoo, soap etc) prepared with
the farm's essential oils.

CLOTHING
(Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo) By far the best place to come for Madagascar's funky T-
shirts. You'll find all the main brands here (Baobab, Carambole, Maki etc) and a large
choice of models and sizes. Credit cards accepted.

(Rte du Mausolée; 8.30am-6.30pm Mon-Fri, 8.30am-12.30pm & 2-6.30pm Sat) This
huge shop stocks anything and everything you could possibly want to bring back from
Madagascar, from beautiful bottles of
rhum arrangé
(homemade rum with fruit inside) to
leather goods, raffia baskets, hats and spices. The only thing you won't find are gemstones.
Prices are fixed but reasonable. It's a short taxi ride from the centre (Ar5000 one way).
