Théâtre de Verdure CONCERT VENUE
(Ave Rainitsarovy) This amphitheatre has occasional shows featuring artists from the
Malagasy charts, as well as regular gospel-music or church-choir concerts that set the
crowd on fire. Tickets are generally very cheap.
Grill du Rova LIVE MUSIC
(Rue Ramboatiana, Avaradrova) This restaurant has regular music recitals, including a pi-
ano bar on Friday, traditional performances from noon to sunset every Sunday, and impro-
vised musical soirées on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Find it about 100m
downhill from the Rova.
Le Club NIGHTCLUB
(Ave Rainizanabolone; admission Ar5000; from 10.30pm Fri & Sat) Tana's biggest,
flashiest club space, designed in a modern style, has the DJ spinning recent tunes from his
lofty winged booth above the dance floor. It's about 200m past Marché Pochart.
Phoenix NIGHTCLUB
(Rue Rabobalahy; admission Ar5000; Wed-Sun) Enter through the surreal giant mouth
to access a strange mix of giant screens with faux-Moroccan decor. It's very quiet outside
of Fridays and Saturdays.
HIRA GASY
Traditional Malagasy performances of acrobatics, music and speeches, hira
gasy ( Click here ) events are held most Sunday afternoons in the villages around
Antananarivo. Check newspapers for details; entry is generally very cheap
(Ar500 to Ar1000), and the experience is great fun.
Tana's regional tourist office Ortana ( www.tourisme-antananarivo.com ) also
organises a hira gasy at Jardin d'Andolaho ( 2.30-4.30pm Sun Aug-Sep) in
the Haute-Ville to try and revive the tradition. It is free to attend, although spec-
tators normally throw small notes (Ar100 or Ar200 for instance) to the team
who performed best.
