The World Health Organization (WHO; www.who.int ) recommends the fol-
lowing vaccinations as routine (many are administered as part of standard child-
hood immunisation programs in developed countries, but adults may need a

»diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP)
»Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) - this is the leading cause of bacterial
meningitis
»hepatitis B
»measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
»pneumococcal disease

»tuberculosis
»varicella
Vaccinations for the following are also recommended for Madagascar:
»hepatitis A
»typhoid
Rabies is endemic in Madagascar, but vaccination is only recommended for vis-
