Lodge fails, this hotel on the west side of the village shines: it has the best double rooms
around, with split levels, bold Asian styling, and knockout views across a verdant rice
paddy. The restaurant (mains from Ar14,000) has equally creative French cuisine, and

Hôtel Les Orchidées HOTEL €
( 56 832 05, 034 36 024 49; d Ar30,000-40,000) This wooden hotel-restaurant in the
centre of Andasibe village seems intent on proving that you can't judge a book by its cover.
Once you get past the rough exterior, it feels like a charming cabin, with cosy rooms up-
stairs. The great surprise is the large brick annexe out back that triples its size. The pole in
the restaurant (mains Ar7000) adds a welcome structural element.
Vohitsara Guest House GUESTHOUSE €
( 034 60 089 69; vohitsara@hotmail.com; d/f Ar20,000/30,000) This family-run oper-
ation on the outskirts of the village offers a varied selection of clean budget rooms with
external showers and Malagasy food on request. Reception is in the Mitsinjo building.
Mikalo BUNGALOW €€
( 56 832 08, 033 11 817 85; new bungalow d Ar94,000) This hotel on the south side
of the village has a showpiece roadside restaurant (set menu Ar19,000) offering the usual
suspects - zebu, seafood, pasta - that gets high marks for design. But you need to sort care-
fully through the bungalows, which come in three levels of varying quality and attention to
detail. Pass on the old chalets near the train station in favour of the new wooden bungalows
in the forest with balconies and occasional fireplaces.
Hôtel Feon'ny Ala BUNGALOW €€
( 56 832 02, 033 05 832 02; d bungalow Ar38,000-64,900, camping Ar8000) Whoever
named this charming garden hotel 'Song of the Forest' was pretty much on the money: the
site is virtually part of the forest near Lac Rouge in Parc National d'Andasibe, so close that
you can hear the indris at breakfast. The thatched bungalows are rather close together but
very comfortable, with hot showers. A couple of basic bungalows with shared bathroom
