Nandipo PIZZERIA €€€
(Rue Albert 1er; mains Ar16,000-20,000; breakfast, lunch & dinner; ) This very cool
place, done up as a Spanish bodega (the owner is from Barcelona), is the yachtsmen's and
expats' hangout of choice. It serves good (if pricey) wood-oven pizzas and has good music,
a great selection of drinks and the best ambience in town.
La Case de Moffe CAFE €
(Blvd de l'Indépendance; cakes & sandwiches Ar1000-5000; 7am-1pm & 3-7pm Mon-
Sat, 7am-1pm Sun) La Case de Moffe is an endearing Franco-Malagasy name that means
'the bread's house'. This little bakery does scrumptious bread and croissants (courtesy of a
French baker). There is a lovely patio where you can enjoy your pastries with an espresso
or devour baguette sandwiches with fresh fruit juices. The éclairs are to die for.
Oasis Café CAFE €
(Blvd de l'Indépendance; mains Ar6000-12,000; breakfast, lunch & dinner Mon-Sat)
Oasis' sidewalk seating is prime people-watching territory. The cafe serves food all day,
but it does breakfast best, with excellent baguettes, good pastries and proper coffee, includ-
ing espresso.
Marché de Hell-Ville MARKET €
(Place du Marché; 6am-5pm) Hell-Ville's market is a good place to pick up fruit and
veggies for picnics, as well as spices.
La Porte Rouge BAR
(Rue R Tsiomeko; 11am-11pm) Next to the Hôtel Belle Vue, La Porte Rouge is a social
watering hole popular with locals. The ambience is animated and amiable. There is some-
times dancing and live music at the weekend.
