In-Depth Information
»Day 3: Morombé to Tuléar, along the coast. This splendid stretch of coastline
hugs Madagascar's Great Reef. There are a number of gorgeous hotels and lots
of good snorkelling and diving to do, so you may well want to split this in two
days. For more info on this bit of the coast, Click here .
Parc National de Kirindy-Mitea
Not to be confused with the Réserve Forestière de Kirindy, the Parc National de Kirindy-
Mitea, which surrounds the village of Belo-sur-Mer, is one of Madagascar's newest parks.
It is remote, beautiful, with little infrastructure, and for that reason, seldom visited. What
this means for visitors is that those making the effort to get here will be rewarded with an
intimate experience in an environment rarely disturbed by visitors.
Park Fees & Guides
The park is still developing its infrastructure, so admission fees (per 1/2 days Ar10,000/
15,000) are low, as are guiding fees: there are two guides (Ar5000) who speak French and
English. Because the park is remote, it is best to organise your visit in Morondava. The
friendly staff at the MNP Office ( 95 921 28; www.parcs-madagascar.com ; Ny Havana
Bldg, Morondava; 7.30am-noon & 2.30-6pm Mon-Fri) will issue you with entry tickets
and arrange a guide. They can also help you arrange transport.
There is also a small park office in Belo-sur-Mer, between the church and Dorotel: the
building is unmarked, so ask people to point it out. Staff are often out and about; if that's
the case, Dorotel is generally well informed as to their whereabouts.
ACTIVITIES
ThemaindrawatKirindy-Miteaisthebirdlife-47speciesintotal,33ofwhichareendem-
ic - although there are lemurs and reptiles too. The park has two two-hour hiking circuits:
one focusing on the birdlife along the lake and the coast, and the other on the park's forest.
There is also the possibility of doing a pirogue trip (Ar30,000) along the estuary and the
mangrove; the park staff can help you arrange it.
