Réserve Forestière de Kirindy
This reserve, 60km northeast of Morondava, covers about 12,500 hectares and was estab-
lished in the late 1970s as an experiment in sustainable logging and forest management. It
is now a protected area, popular with scientists and travellers for its amazing wildlife.
Kirindy is one of the few places in Madagascar where you are very likely to see the
fossa (Cryptoproctafelix) ,the country'slargest predator,a puma-like creature with oversize
ears and a strangely elongated body, the size of a large cat. The best time to see them is in
the mating season (September to November), although your chances are good year-round
since they tend to hang around the camp in the hope of stealing goodies from the kitchen.
ALLÉE DES BAOBABS
One of the most photographed spots in Madagascar is this small stretch of the
RN8 between Morondava and Belo-sur-Tsiribihina: flanked on both sides by
majestic Adansonia grandidieri baobabs, it is a sight that has become symbolic
of Madagascar. The trees here are as old as 1000 years, with huge, gnarled
branches fanning out at the top of their trunks: it's easy to see why they've been
nicknamed 'roots of the sky'.
