(Rue de l'Indépendance; mains Ar13,000-18,000) In a tall wooden building on stilts over-
looking Morondava's beach, the Renala serves delicious Franco-Malagasy cuisine. Sea-
food is the name of the game: try the camaron , the crab or whatever fish is on offer that
day. All the side dishes are beautifully crafted, too, including delicious sautéed potatoes if
you fancy a change from rice.
Les Bougainvilliers MALAGASY €€
(Rue de l'Indépendance; mains Ar10,000-15,000; breakfast, lunch & dinner) The Bou-
gainvilliers has made a name for itself by serving excellent Malagasy dishes and there-
fore attracting travellers as well as locals. You'll find traditional dishes such as ravitoto ,
romazava de la mer (a seafood stew) and coconut crab. The three-course menu du jour
(Ar20,000) is excellent value. The breakfast (Ar6500) also includes very good croissants.
L'Oasis EUROPEAN €
(Rte de la Plage; mains Ar8000-12,000) Presided over by an affable local guy called Jean
le Rasta, or Rasta Jean, l'Oasis has the best atmosphere in town. There is live music every
night, including drums and reggae performed by Rasta Jean and other local musicians. The
food is also pretty good, although fairly standard with grilled meat and fish, coconut chick-
en etc.
Couleur Café CAFE €
(Rue de l'Indépendance; mains Ar7000-10,000; breakfast, lunch & dinner) In a beauti-
ful traditional building made of local wood and thatch, Couleur Café serves simple meals
such as crêpes, sandwiches and grilled meat or fish. It's a lovely spot for lunch thanks to its
beach location; there is also a great bar, with a nice selection of flavoured house rums.
Le Masoandro EUROPEAN €€
(ChezMaggie,Ruedel'Indépendance;mainsAr11,000-15,000; breakfast,lunch&din-
ner) The atmosphere at Chez Maggies's thatch-roof restaurant is a tad formal, but you can't
fault the service, or the food. The house speciality is grill: be it steak, jumbo shrimp or the
catch of the day, everything comes out cooked to perfection. The bar has a wide selection
of scotch, whiskey and delicious homemade coconut rum.
