Parad'Ice CAFE €
(Rue du Maréchal Joffre; mains Ar5000-9000; 8am-9.30pm Tue-Sun) This cheerful
cafe-restaurant serves simple but well-prepared meals, including salads you can tuck into
without hesitation, and rotating plats du jour such as ravitoto (pork stew with manioc
greens), zebu stew etc. It also does burgers and croque-monsieurs (ham-and-cheese grilled
sandwiches), excellent home-made ice creams and breakfasts.
Fishing Residence SEAFOOD €€
( www.fishingresidence.com ; Blvd Marcoz; mains Ar13,000-16,000) This hotel-restaurant
is well known for its exquisite seafood, such as calamari and prawns in combava (wild
lemon) sauce or grilled swordfish. There is also a good selection of meat dishes, including
game in season. The dining room is in a large thatched hut by the hotel's swimming pool
and is particularly atmospheric in the evening.
Boulangerie Zapandis BAKERY €
(Rue de Serbie; snacks & coffees Ar1000-5000; 6am-noon & 4-6pm Fri-Wed) A true
French patisserie that doubles up as a cafe serving wonderful cakes, pastries, croissants and
creamy ice cream.
Marco Pizza PIZZERIA €€
(Ave d'Amborovy; pizzas from Ar10,000) This friendly joint with street seating churns out
excellent - and absolutely huge - pizzas with a variety of meat, fish and vegetarian top-
pings. It's a couple of kilometres from the centre but every taxi knows where it is so you
won't have trouble finding it.
ANTSANITIA BEACH RESORT
Located about 40 minutes north of Majunga on an isolated stretch of coast, Ant-
sanitia Beach Resort ( 62 023 34; www.antsanitia.com ; bungalows from
Ar145,000; ), pronounced 'An-tsan-tee', is a fantastic resort. As well as
creature comforts - lovely bungalows with wood and raffia furniture, a gor-
geous pool, open-air bar and fabulous restaurant - and a wonderful setting,
guests will be able to enjoy a plethora of activities, from sailing to trekking,
snorkelling, pirogue trips and cultural excursions.
The hotel has put sustainability at the heart of everything it does, so many of
the activities on offer involve trips to local villages or outings with local fishers.
The resort also employs and trains a number of people from the area, and it
