Tuléar (Toliara)
POP 136,000
Tuléar is mostly known as a transit point. It has a bit of Antsirabe about it, with a sea
of pousse-pousse bouncing down dusty lanes, and the same crumbling relics of the colo-
nial past. But while few people see this as a vacation destination, it actually offers some
interesting ways to spend your time, if you know where to look, most of it on the seafront.
The concentration of travellers has bred some fascinating accommodation, and some actual
nightlife, too. Add this to a somewhat raffish tropical ambiance fuelled by the local French
expats, and you have the setting for your first novel. Do take taxis after 9pm.
