TOURS
The primary tour guide in Manakara is Ignace ( 032 40 481 02, 033 08 947 74, 034
12 308 22; magnarobo@moov.mg), who can handle any request you throw at him. One
standard offering is a full-day (8am to 5.30pm) pirogue tour of the canal for Ar40,000 per
person. This includes visiting a vanilla plantation, and lunch (including lobster) at a natural
ocean pool where you can swim. His English is limited, but an English-speaking guide can
also be provided.
If you really want to strike out on your own you can rent kayaks (per hr Ar3000) at La
Guinguette.
SLEEPING & EATING
Tanambao has a number of serviceable concrete hotels with little to differentiate them ex-
cept air-conditioning. In general it is much better to pay up a bit and stay on the beach,
particularly in summer, when inland can be sweltering.
Club Vanille BUNGALOW €€
( 72 210 23, 034 17 209 68; hotellavanillemanakara @yahoo.fr; Manakara-Be; bunga-
lows Ar50,000) Madagascar breeds end-of-the-earth locations ( Click here ), and this is one
of the better ones. Just don't mistake this satellite operation for the main Hotel Vanille in
downtown Tanambao. You get here by crossing the bridge to the beach, turning right, and
driving 8km down the peninsula. There you'll find some canal-side bungalows and a res-
taurant offering catches of the day and cold beer. Best of all, you are caught between the
absolute roar of the surf on one side, and the placid canal on the other. It's a long way from
town but perfect downtime. Shuttle service (Ar5000) available.
