problem, and there is a Ar3000 entry fee, but otherwise this crater lake is even
prettier, and the path around it makes for an easy circumnavigation.
Andraikiba can be reached by taxi-be 4, 5, and 11. Tritiva is more difficult to
get to, as the 4 only goes about 5km of the way there. However, another option
that gets a thumbs up from local expats is to bike to the lakes. At Rando VTT
(Ave Foch, Antsirabe) you can get a good mountain bike with a lock and pump
for Ar20,000 per day or Ar10,000 per half day. The Green Park hotel also rents
bikes. Either one should be able to give you directions in English.
Ambositra
POP 38,000
Ambositra is located in the centre of a very broad valley ringed by verdant peaks. It's a lot
quieter, cleaner andprettier thanAntsirabe, soitmakesforapleasant contrast. It'salsoalot
smaller, so the sleeping and eating options are reduced, particularly the latter. You're defin-
itely getting away from the world here: there is no internet available save for one slow cafe.
On the other hand, this rustic town is an overachiever in arts and crafts, offering wood-
carvings, raffia baskets, polished stones, marqueterie (objects inlaid with coloured woods)
and paintings. This is a place to wander crooked streets in search of a gift, or sip some tea
by the side of a rice paddy, enlivened by fresh mountain air.

Many of the arts and crafts in town are located on the ring road at the heart of town, par-
ticularly the western loop. So the thing to do is simply to stroll around and have a look.
The number of enterprises is a lot smaller than you'll find in the markets of Antsirabe or
Fianarantsoa, but you can step into a shop, learn how things are made and take your time
examining them here in ways you can't elsewhere.
