Green Park Hotel HOTEL €

d/tr Ar30,000/40,000) This place has a beautiful garden and (somewhat iffy) pond. There
are three excellent rooms in roundtowers, very nicely decorated, and a highly regarded res-
taurant, Chez Jenny , known for having the best pizza in town. Reserve in high season.
Villa Nirina B&B €€
( 44 486 69; [e-mail]; Ave Foch; d/tr Ar50,000/70,000) The five rooms
at this family-run B&B are rather small and come with shared bathroom. The exterior yard
is well kept, and in a walled compound that provides welcome privacy from the hectic
streets. The owner (but not the staff) speaks English.
Pension de Famille Sulby HOTEL €
( 032 80 467 22; [e-mail]; Antsenakely; d Ar20,000) If you are out of luck
with budget accommodation, this one will do fine. It's centrally located, has clean rooms,
the owners are friendly and the prices are rock bottom. The street can get a bit noisy.
Nouveau Synchro Pub HOTEL €
( 44 962 24, 033 14 212 09; www.synchropub.com ; Antsenakely; d Ar25,000) Don't be
thrown by the name. This is a hotel with a pub (set menu Ar10,000), and a strong budget
option at that: quiet, on a hill overlooking the city, with a nice rooftop cafe, and close to
town without feeling so. Room No 1, a corner room with views, manages to be romantic.
Hôtel des Thermes INN €€€
( 44 487 61, 44 487 62; d Ar125,000-256,000; ) Once the Grand Dame of Antsirabe,
the Old Lady just ain't what she used to be. Everything is falling apart, something even the
creepy lighting can't hide, making the prices laughable. It's too bad: once you get past the
surreal lobby, you can sense the grandeur that once was.
EATING
Food is very inexpensive in Antsirabe, even at major hotels. Among the latter, Trianon ,
Résidence Camélia and Chez Jenny , at Green Park, have good reputations.
There are numerous places serving inexpensive Malagasy food and more in the southern
end of town, south of the cathedral. The best-stocked supermarket is the huge Shoprite ,
near Antsenakely.
