3.11.4 Shear friction
The strut-and-tie analogy for the behaviour of reinforced concrete may be applied
to the common problem of carrying shear force through a construction joint. A very
crude way of carrying the shear force across this joint is to use large-diameter dowels
that work in shear and bending, and that apply highly concentrated local compressive
forces to the concrete, Figure 3.25 (a). However, this is not a good solution, as dowels
defl ect signifi cantly when under load, cracking the joint and losing the homogeneity
of the concrete.
