to a failure of the waterproof membrane, the stainless steel links would guarantee a
ductile failure mode.
Conventional carbon steel may be coated with epoxy resin to protect it from
corrosion. This was popular some years ago, but is falling out of favour. There are
reports that the adhesion of concrete to such coated steel may be reduced, with
considerably increased bond lengths. Also, the coating is prone to damage during
delivery and installation.
Much research has been carried out on reinforcement consisting of fi breglass rods.
Conventional glass is attacked by the alkali in the cement, but special alkali-resistant
glass is being devised. Although such products are not yet in the mainstream, this
research may well bear fruit.
