sequence. Box section decks are inherently torsionally strong. Consequently, where a
deck is to carry British style heavy live loading, it would be logical to opt for a single
central box carried by a single plane of cables. Such a deck may be very light, with
an equivalent thickness close to 500 mm, and the complication of building the box
section may be mitigated by adopting precast segmental technology. Alternatively the
edge ribs may be replaced by boxes, or for a narrow deck, the box may be widened to
the complete width of the deck, as at Barrios de Luna, Figure 18.5.
If the cable-stayed deck is part of a longer viaduct which is to be built in precast
segmental box sections, the standard boxes may be adapted for use in the suspended
deck. This was the case for the project shown in Figure 18.10, although it would have
