2.5 m thick and 7 m wide at the base. The leaves were spaced at 7.5 m centres at the
base, reducing to 5 m at a point beneath the cable stay anchorages. Above this point
the leaves were joined together to form a single box section. This arrangement gave
the pylons the strength necessary to resist lateral and longitudinal forces on the deck
while maintaining the fl exibility necessary to accommodate the length changes. It also
provided a stable base for the erection of the deck in balanced cantilever. The end
supports consisted of fl exible concrete columns, built into the deck. Thus, the bridge
had no bearings, minimising maintenance.
