Under typical 52.5 m spans, the foundation consisted of two 1.5 m diameter piles,
arranged laterally and inclined to reduce the bending moments due to centrifugal
forces. This arrangement of piles left the pier fl exible in the longitudinal direction.
The spans carrying the stations were founded on pile caps supported by four piles.
Each expansion length was anchored on a group of central piers equipped with
fi xed pot bearings. Joint piers and intermediate piers were equipped with one guided
and one free-sliding pot bearing. The number of fi xed piers was maximised, taking
advantage of the fl exibility of the single-pile foundation. As the two bearings on each
fi xed pier were less than 3 m apart and as the deck was made of precast segments,
