85. Rose Garden of Ramón Ortiz, Madrid
Here is a spot in Madrid that garden lovers will enjoy: the rose garden of Ramón Ortiz. Don
Ramón Ortiz was the major gardener of the city, and he built this garden in 1958.
The feel is romantic, with the roses planted in spots that, when seen from a distance, reveal
a carefully planned geometry. There are about 20,000 roses, of 500 different varieties from
around the world. The garden is very pleasant, with several ponds, pergolas and a monu-
mental fountain. It's located very close to the Parque del Oeste and the Temple of Debod, so
if you're visiting any of those two, stop by to admire these exquisite flowers.
Every May, the garden hosts an international rose contest, also created by Ramón Ortiz, and
one variety is chosen as the best rose of the year. The winning flowers are planted in the
garden and are identified by a sign indicating their variety and the year in which they won.
