82.Campo del Moro Gardens, Madrid
If you're near the Royal Palace , consider a visit to the Campo
del Moro Gardens. Once a hunting preserve for the Spanish
monarchs, these grounds were turned into a lush garden in sev-
eral stages starting in the 18 th Century. Despite its mix of design
styles, the most prominent is the English Romantic. In its 20
hectares you'll find plenty of quiet spots, despite being located
just a few steps from a busy city center.
The most spectacular view in the gardens is the majestic main
avenue, a steep green slope at the end of which you'll see the
Royal Palace in its grandeur. There are several wooden houses
of Tyrolese and tropical style that lend an exotic and romantic
atmosphere.
If you're lucky, you may cross paths with one of the many peacocks that walk freely the
grounds.
